Dear Change

Dear Change,

There are days I wish you were considerate. Asked

Then came. Requested access

Then intruded. Inquired about my desires

Then meddled.

There are days I wish you gave notice of your near arrival

Told my Grandpa you were on your way

Then stepped over the threshold.

Knocked and stated your name, be it Sickness, Relocation, or Separation

Then waited for the door to open to you.

But there are days I would welcome you with open arms. Don’t ask

Just come. Don’t request access

Just enter. Don’t inquire

Just listen for my invitation, however it appears.

Whether it’s a whisper, a letter, a call, or a cry (more often than not, the latter)

Listen and invade, overtake the routine.

Abolish the dullness

Obliterate the repetitive cycles of life and its grayness.

But don’t just kill the negative

Give birth to the beauty of newness.

If you come as Sickness, inspire purpose for life,

Relocation, introduce life-giving community,

Separation, ignite passion for commitment to the next season.

But some days come also as Excitement, or Adventure

Because I miss those sides of you.

Change, I miss you.

I’ve gone looking for you

Worked hard to see you

I’ve broadcasted the whisper

The letter

The call

The cry

I’ve knocked on your door

But it seems to be locked.

Now I’m waiting

I’m waiting for the knock at my door.

Sincerely,

Restless
