Dear College Roommate

 Dear college roommate,

My favorite color is blue.

Blue as in: I will gaze outside our window surrounded by dim lighting when it’s raining and read my poems to the racing water droplets and sweating leaflets. Don’t worry. This is normal.

My pastimes will include seeking volunteering, reading short stories, and stepping on sidewalk cracks.

My lovely mom, taking you in as her sixth child, will send you delectable tamales and menudo every holiday.

I will happily stay up all night preparing for a major exam with you, and I will support you in any way you need. I hope we gain enough trust in each other to engage in philosophical discussions and to try answering worldly paradoxes. I’m optimistic that our belly-laughs will turn the nightly darkness into a neon-light circus, so that our inevitable frustrated cries will not seem so bad.

I will remind you that you are beautiful and talented every day because the feeling of worthlessness, as I am often bombarded by, is not a feeling I wish for anyone.

Seven alarms, set on my phone, pester me every early morning because I am direly afraid of being late to anything, but I will gladly shut five of them off for you.

As an ice breaker, I will tell you about the time I fell from my dumpster bicycle traveling eighty miles per hour. As comedic relief from the tension of meeting someone new, I will certainly exaggerate. I will describe to you how I had never felt so sore while simultaneously enjoying the inhale of so much greenery sweetness.

Once the ice is broken and melted, I will explain how appendicitis nearly killed me and prevented our meeting. Comparing my appendix’s vestigial qualities with love and heartbreak, I will analogize the extraction of a vestigial organ with the beginning of a new course of life. Yes, I am this dramatic.

I would be lying if I said I had everything figured out, so just know that I am eager to grow and learn with you. Before move-in day knocks on our humble doors, I hope we can hunt for cute, matching bed spreads together, which should scream, “a yearning to change the world made us pursue a college degree, but our room must look put together!”.

Most importantly, I will respect you and listen. If the above does not delight you, I will respect that.

I cannot wait to meet you. I hope you like the color blue, too.

Warm regards,
