Dear Depression
Dear Depression,
You never really left me, did you? Old friend, you never let me go, did you? You've been here all this time. I think I've gotten used to your touch now. It's not so harsh anymore. Your voice, it doesn't give me chills anymore. Your presence, it isn't cold anymore. Like I said, you're my friend. You've always been there for me, really. Even in the light, while I laugh and dance and sing, you're there. But you're not there like you used to be. Now, well now you're there to show me how good things have gotten. You show me how much things have changed. You, dear depression, remind me of who I was, then remind me of who I am now. You showed me what darkness looks like so that I might finally understand what the light looks like.
Depression, you never left me. Your touch, it helps me feel now. I've learned what emotions feel like. It reminds me that you're not the only emotion I have to feel. I'm not numb anymore. Your voice, it's comforting now. The sound of it lets me hear the music in life. It lets me hear the highs and the lows, the sounds of emotion in people’s voices. Your touch, it brings me compassion. It clears my eyes so that I can see those who don't understand you yet. It lets me help them so they too, can understand that there is still light.
Don't ever leave me, please. Not so that I may become you again, but so that I can continue understanding you. So I can learn your lessons. So that I can bear witness to those who feel you too. Don't ever leave me, depression.
