Dear Earth

Dear Earth,

You surround me every day,

with your flowing rivers and rich soil.

Providing so much as you go on your way.

Always you are loyal.

You have been more of a parent to me than anything else.

Always there to protect me, to keep me going.

Sharing your wisdom with each of my steps.

Just like the trees, with your help, I keep growing.

You taught me the most important lessons in life,

be strong, be selfless, show courage, not fear.

As we cut through your skin like a knife,

these lessons grow more clear.

This is why I am so sorry.

Each day that goes by you are more depleted,

losing your body.

I cannot help but think you have been cheated.

People continue to reproduce,

taking your resources, acting as kings.

As they hang you by a noose,

harder to you I cling.

The wildlife, the mountains, the trees,

something humans could never create.

Yet, we continue to destroy the bees.

Without thought to the future that awaits.

I would give anything to help you heal.

My hands, my feet, my heart, my soul.

All of this yours so you won’t have to feel,

the pain of not being whole.

You take the poison from our air,

and provide us with new.

Only for us to bring that poison back

as if we don’t have a clue.

As we continue to kill you,

you keep us in awe.

Your beauty grows deeper,

as we cause your glaciers to thaw.

All we do is take, take, take,

and you continue to give.

Even surrounded by this fate,

you strive to stay strong and live.

Waves crash down hard on the sand.

One after the other strikes again.

I wonder if it’s you calling out for a helping hand,

waiting for someone to pull you in.

But it takes everyone,

and that’s the beauty of it.

We must all be stewards,

instead of remaining split.

Maybe one day we will learn from you,

and kindness will shine through.

Bringing light to what is true.

We will all realize we are connected to you.

With love,

Chey
