Dear Future Daughter
You will be birthed by the most beautiful entity I will have ever laid my eyes on. Honeyed by the vast collection of stars in the space within her womb. Her concentrated essence implemented in your very foundation.
If I could… I would wrap you in the ever changing colors of the sky, cover you in both love and security. Speak life into you as I hold you in my arms for the first time and as you grow older, I’d braid knowledge and awareness into your hair. Moisturize your body with black excellence and inject black holes beneath your skin and let them burst like midnight over the sky.
Sprinkle stardust in your eyes and let them shine for an eternity, put the universe in your hands, and embed galaxies in your earrings. You’d have all of reality at your fingertips.
I’d imagine your wedding day; seeing you all dressed in white, bathed in innocence, I’d shake fear into the skeleton of your husband until he showed backbone. I’d ensure that he gives you nothing less than the moon as the rock that would lie on your finger.
I’d live out your future in my dreams and take care of you until the end of my time here. I would count backwards from 100, realize that I was dreaming, wake up and do it all over again.
And I’m sorry that you are still nonexistent, but I know that I am not the man that would be necessary to raise you, not yet at least but I cannot wait for the day when my eyes pin themselves to your existence. I would shed waterfalls across my face that Niagara couldn’t even compare to. I would love you until you fill the hole in my heart. I would love you until my body began to ache into sorrows that I never knew were possible. I would love you greater than the love that my father forgot to show me. He abandoned me and I promise I will never abandon you.
Sincerely, your future father.
Sincerely, a man who doesn’t fully know what it means to be a man.
Sincerely, a man who would hope to be your closest friend.
