Dear Future Husband,
When I think about the future
I often think of you
What you look like, what you sound like
And, all the things we’ll do
I know I’ve never met you
But I see you in the distance
You’re not far, just lost
And in the instance,
The moment
When I spot your face
I’ll know it’s really you
For the one actually exists
And that I know to be true
My mother often told me
“Every pot has a lid”
On days when I was lonely
And, genuinely thought you hid.
Friends were cruel and harmful.
Where were you then?
I needed you, but you weren’t there
I prayed with strong “amen”
But today is different.
In my eighteen year glow
I wear a smile on my face
Because soon to college I’ll go
And during that chapter
I’ll find what I’ve been searching for
You’ll be sitting beneath a tree
at my favorite spot on campus
Sipping a cup of British black tea
And, I’ll know.
I’ll know that it’s you waiting
Pen and paper in your hands
Maybe you’re writing about me
To discern who I really am.
And, I’ll know.
When you look up with a glance
See me standing over
Looking dazed, looking to you
Like we were meant for one another
So today sitting in study
Where I’m all alone again
I just remember, my love
That that is where you’ve been
Waiting for me steadfast and true
And, I’ll know that forever
Is so much more than the time that flew
While I waited and waited, just like you.
As soon as I see you, gazing at me
The future is no longer a yearning thought
The future is here, it’s what I can see.
And, I don’t need to dream.
I just know.
