Dear Future Immigrants

Dear Future Immigrants,

I hear America singing,
I can hear her from Asia,
From Europe, from Australia,
Across the ocean from Africa,

I hear America singing,
Beckoning me to come,
She welcomes me with open arms,
Serenades me with her anthem,

I hear America singing,
Of fortune, freedom, friendship,
I heed the cries of opportunity and chance,
And newfound love and kinship,

My brothers and sisters have all gone,
They’ve heard America’s song,
Alas! It is my turn to go,
I feel I already belong,

Thousands of voices sing America’s song,
Not all from the same land as I,
But together we came and together we sang,
In our new home, all under one sky.

From, Past Immigrants
