dear hands

Dear hands,

I think about you a lot now and I just wanted to say I'm sorry

I'm sorry for biting off your nails and peeling off your skin when I'm nervous

For clipping you down so low you bled

I hope you can find it in your palm to forgive me

Dear hands I wanted to say thank you

You have given me so many gifts, you allow me to know softness and burn

You give me holding and touch, things I've taken for granted

You gave me writing, my brightest beauty

I just wanted to ask why can you never stop sweating

To the hands of the person I love

You are always so cold but that's okay because mine are always so warm

I heard people say that relationships can either be fire or ice

But I like how our temperatures become the median

I couldn't imagine anything but this lukewarm love

To the hands of my best friend,

The way you wipe my tears feels like an act of beauty

You are small and delicate yet I have never seen hands so strong

You slap me and hold me in one motion

You have taught me how to laugh

You will always have my heart in the center of your palm

To the hands of my soul mate,

Your thin long fingers fit perfecting with my short stubby ones

You play with my hair mindlessly as if by instinct

The way you caress me feels like I've been given a home

Can I just ask that you stop hiding her beautiful smile

To the hands of my parents

You shaped a home for me out of sticks and stones

You are calloused and cracked from the years spent cooking and cleaning for me

The dirt underneath your fingernails hasn't been cleaned in years

You held me in hard times so I will hold you till the very end

All of your hands created a beauty so strong her light shown through the crack of your fingers

You all created me

Hands bonded together by the sun in my eyes but that was your reflection

You are my sun, my light

You are the hands that held me
