Dear Hope

Dear Hope,

I know that we haven’t talked much

And I’m sorry that I’ve been distant

But Hope,

I just can’t do this anymore

I can’t stand here and act like I’m alright

Because I’m not

We’re not

Hope,

You’re amazing

When I’m with you

All of my fear and anxiety melt away

And I feel like I can actually look forward to tomorrow

But Hope,

All your friends hate me!

Happiness avoids me

I barely know Faith

Peace is your friend, not mine

And Success actually hates me

And Hope,

Oh, you say that it’s not true

That it’s all in my mind

You want proof?

Okay, fine, I’ll give you proof.

Let’s see

Whenever I walk up to a group

Happiness is the first to turn away

And the last to say hello

In fact

As soon as I say a word

As soon as I try to create some semblance of a lasting relationship

Happiness runs from me

Making sure out paths don’t meet

For as long as possible

Faith is more of an acquaintance than a friend

But you still have faith that we’ll “connect” one day

Connect as if every cheap hello and awkward how-are-you

Will add up to anything more than a long line of meaningless words

I’m sorry, but I don’t buy it

I don’t believe in what I can’t see

And you do realize that I still haven’t met Peace

You say eventually

And that when I finally do

I’ll experience that unique calmness

That only comes from being in Peace’s presence

The one that you’ve known for years

So much longer than you’ve known me

But every time we try to meet I always have a conflict

And I’ve given up

I guess I’m too busy for Peace

Always trying to reach the place where Hope has me believing I can be

And Success

Oh

Success is the worst of the lot

It doesn’t matter what I do

What I say

I’ve learned that anytime I even look at Success

I’m greeted with a hateful stare back

And I’ve tried

Hope,

I’ve have tried to be nice

To just be cordial

To even approach Success

But every single time with Success I get knocked to the ground

And then I’m working twice as hard just to get back to where I was yesterday

And Hope,

You don’t understand any of this

I know you don’t

Because you know them

And you’ve known them for years

But Happiness

Faith

Peace

Success

They’re just not for me

And Hope,

I don’t know what that means for us

Because I’m not sure that just having Hope is enough

Not when all I do is end up disappointed

After you’ve led me to believe that I could have these other friends

That there could be something more

And Hope,

Soon I’m sure that you’ll leave me too

I’ve been told that Hope is a thing with feathers

But in my experience

Someone being able to fly away

Never bodes well for me

So this is me saying goodbye

Because if Happiness

Faith

Peace

And Success

Are all out of my reach

Then I don’t think Hope is enough
