Dear Mom

Dear Mom,

I don’t blame you

for coming home after 7

every night or

never volunteering

at school functions,

I knew

you needed to work.

I know

you think

I’m mad at you

about my father’s tendency to choose drugs

over me

or you.

I know

that you tried

to make me forget

most of the time

it worked

but it’s not your fault

it never was.

I am mad at you

for making me overcompensate

for your mistakes,

thinking I wasn’t great

enough if I failed.

My conception

was my first failure.

I could do no right

even when I didn’t do wrong.

So know I will always respect

your decision to not OD

while I was growing inside you.

Love,

Your One and Only
