dear new (old) lover

dear new (old) lover,
You are not the first to write your name on me.
The you before you
wrote his name with
a heavy hand.
He convinced me he’d written
(in ink)
across my back,
circling my waist,
on the soles of my feet,
around my throat (it hurt).
I wore his name with pride until
I saw his autograph

on someone else. (how could he?)

And as I bathed,
(in tears and sweat from missing him)
his letters washed from my skin.

His name was never permanent.

(Yours isn’t either.)
