Dear officers
Dear Officers,
I look around me, and all I see is death
Am I next?
I read books, I watch the news, and I am woke
I am black, strong and proud
I am intelligent, wise and want to someday own my own business
I carry myself with class, maybe a little bit of sass
I have too much mouth for my own good because I want to be understood
You look at people like me and judge because of the color of my skin
Not knowing I am the same within
Yes, I may be brown but that doesn’t mean I’m a clown
That’s how I see it
You see me, and assume I must be up to no good
Driving home you pull me over
My heart races and I think about not stopping
I see it all on the news
Black innocent kids being shot for no reason
No justice
I take my chances and keep driving
I would hate my mom to be crying
My name plastered all over the news
My name is spitted on,
And I look like a fool
You finally caught me
Yes officer?
You flash the bright light
Making me feel like I’m losing my sight
License and Registration?
I reach for it in my glove compartment
POW!
Im dead in a matter of seconds
Looked like she had a gun
She looked suspicious
Why was she so young out with no sun
She was speeding away from me
I thought she was trying to kill me
It was self defense
Makes no common sense
Black seventeen year old girl dead
Do I scare you that much?
That you had to kill me as such?
I can’t apologize for my race
But this is what I can say
I am not who you think I am
I am not what you perceived me as
I am strong, black and proud
I’ll keep saying it loud
I am strong black and proud
Take this letter
Piece it together
Don’t shoot
I was only trying to get home
before you shot me in the dome
Sincerely,
A black innocent girl who had no justice
