Dear Old Oppressor of Mine
I love you because you made the sun shine brighter
I love you because you made me your queen
I loved you because you were sweet, you were kind, and best of all because you loved me.
But was my love for you the same kind of love you had for me?
You did make my world spin and heart beat faster but it changed after a time
You made my heart beat faster in fear of you You made my world spin because you threw me against a wall
And all you said was I hurt you because I love you
That was your justification for breaking me into pieces, for stealing the light in my world
That was your justification for allowing me to believe that it was okay to hit me, to break me, to make me scared of the inquisitive stare
So, I left
I left the love you had for me because it was the toxic kind of love
The love that drowns you and does not allow you to come up for air
Because I love myself, I am leaving my torturer
Because I love myself, I am taking off the shackles of your oppressive love
Because I love myself, I will not stand for this mistreatment
I will rise, like a Phoenix born from the ashes
I will be born anew
Today I met a boy
He smiled like the sun
He taught me what true love is
He showed me I could trust again
His love was not dark; it was pure and true
But now I am going on
Nevertheless, dear old oppressor of mine I am writing this to you
To tell you I am a new woman
Once broken and pathetic
To whole and confident
Now I am strong
Now I am beautiful
Now I know what love really means
But one thing I have learned, is that I must forgive
So because I feel sorry for you, because I am a stronger person And because for some twisted reason, I still feel a connection to you
I forgive you.
