Dear Self
Dear somebody,
Who are you? Out of all your years of education what have you learned about yourself? Draw yourself and describe yourself in 3 words, personal narratives, and self portraits taught you nothing? Nights of stress over analyzing the simple question of who is (insert your name) haunt you. On paper, numbers show someone that thrives in their environment but not the inquisitive soul that lives within. Are you an engineer, mechanically waking up day after day to perform in the factory that is called high school? Or are you an archaeologist slowing dusting away the stereotypes trying to discover the artifact that lies beneath the surface? What sets you apart from others? Are you different or do you just feel different; be careful there’s a difference. You have lived in the same town your whole life but your mind still stumbles when people ask you where you’re from. You are cautiously temerarious, challenging the distinction between rules and breaking them. High school is supposed to be a journey, where one learns who they are and what they want to be. For you, it’s where you got lost but it made you realize you were never where you’re supposed to be. But now….. Where are you going? Have you looked at schools? What’s your gpa? What are you studying? Do you have a job? Who are you? While some may say high school is some of the best years of your life, it often seems that it can be described as a questionnaire. So many questions with few exiguous answers and yet the journey continues. The anticipation builds as your fate rests in the hands of someone else who will place you in either a yes or no pile. You’ve struggled your whole life with being accepted but you realize now that this one is the only time it matters.
