DEAR SOCIETY,
Dear society,
what are we measured by in society as women?
by the length of our skirts
the curl in our hair
the color of our nails
and the size of our breasts.
Not by the years of schooling or the multiple master degrees
or by the volunteer work you did over the summer.
Not by awards or recognitions
or a promotion you just got at work.
No because that doesn’t matter.
If you've gotten straight A’s
good for you,
but once you get a D its because you've been sucking too much of it after school.
Sports won’t get you anywhere because you’re “just a girl”
So keep your grades up
You’ll need a 4.0 to get a lesser scholarship to the same school
than the male basketball star with a 2.5
to then get the same job
where you’ll still get payed less
BUt its ok because you have more to worry about
Because
Wearing a sweatshirt makes you a bum
But a v-neck means you're a tease
Wearing makeup makes you fake
But how could you ever leave the house without it on
don’t let yourself go like that.
If you haven’t been with a guy, you're a loser
But wait you’ve been with two?
What a slut
We are defined by our sexuality not by the content of our character
intelligence and substance mean nothing
Just unbutton your top and look pretty in the corner
Guys know nothing about us
Yet they cant wait to say they banged us to their friends
Mistreated
Degraded
and Disrespected
Catcalled on the corner by 12
Growped by 13
Being followed home by 14
When does it stop
When does the fear that being alone once its dark seiz to exist
When will it be “ok” for girls to wear shorts when its 90 degrees
and it not be an “invitation to get raped”
or wear sweats on their period and not be called a slob
When will men stop disrespecting women
But more importantly when will women stop disrespecting women
When will the phone calls end because I hooked up with your ex
Or the empty threats because we went out to eat
When will females stop calling each other sluts
and just support one another
when will all the hatred stop
just because I went on a date with your boyfriend from 7th grade
Hatred
Fear
Rape
All words I know too well.
