Dear Society

Dear Society,

You all say she’s broken beyond repair,

Only because the shoes she has laced, you could never wear.

Maybe she’s in pieces;

But one day, you will be too.

That doesn’t make her broken,

It just makes her not brand new.

A layer of ice surrounds her heart

But that doesn’t make her cold.

Talk to her because you’ll find

She’s not everything you’ve been told.

And when you’re in the state she was,

She won’t laugh but instead hold your hand

Because of all things, above all else,

She will always understand

That one day we’ll all be broken.

It’s just a simple fact.

We’re broken a thousand times in every life

Torn apart until the layers of illusions are burnt away and all that is left is the truth of who and what we really are:

Little pieces of coal,

Made to be burnt

But only expected to eventually destroy ourselves.

We’re all a little broken

But that’s okay with her.

So instead of making her feel broken,

You should start admitting that you were.

Sincerely,

Sadye Lovett
