Dear Society...
Dear society,
You’ve always been my biggest fear.
Afraid of judgments, critics and harsh words that could make me shed a tear.
A girl not so slim trying to fit among the thin,
Afraid to give anything a try because of the laughs if I didn’t win.
A girl so quiet with thoughts very loud,
I stayed silent, unsure if my answers would make society proud.
My dark skin that started to feel like it wasn’t for me,
Hidden behind layers of clothes so others wouldn’t see.
How do you fit in where you feel you don’t belong?
How do you try to do everything right but still feel it’s wrong?
How do keep trying when you want to give up?
I know how..
It’s called stand up.
Stand up to those critics and show them that you’re stronger,
I will not shed a single tear any longer.
Stand up and say those thoughts, don’t shy away,
Smile and be grateful to see another day.
Stand up and show off that melanated skin,
And don’t feel ashamed for having a double chin.
Dear society...
You’re no longer my biggest fear,
I’m great , strong and powerful, and 2018 is my year.
Sincerely,
R.
