Dear Teardrops

Dear Teardrops,

I used to be ashamed of you
When you would squeeze yourselves into tender conversations,
When you would speak for me instead of the words I wanted to say.
You would expose my emotions.
Sadness,
Anger,
Joy.
It didn’t matter much to you.
You would push until you escaped
Out of my eyes and into my lap.
You made me feel raw.
Too easy to read.
Too easy to manipulate.

Now I know your sting screams purpose.
You shine honestly in my eyes.
Curb my speech so I unleash only the words I need to say.
You still expose my emotions.
You let sadness pool in my lap,
so misery doesn’t erode my heart.
You steam up my glasses,
so rage won’t boil in my stomach.
You drip off my chin,
so joy flows and grows.
You make me feel new.
Too genuine to hide.
Too true to get lost.

Thank you, Teardrops.

Until next time,
Hannah Smith
