Dearest Courage,

Wherever did you go

When the harsh wind did blow

The tree branches against my window?

I knew I was safe

But my insides still ached

As the scrapes and sounds clawed at my eardrums.

Dearest Courage you weren’t there

While I was shivering and scared

Watching shadows waltz in the moonlight.

Dearest Courage what should I say?

Like distant memories, you fade

When I need you, when the stars are not bright.

Dearest Courage, I’m afraid

Of the past mistakes I’ve made.

The guilt stalks me like feline to prey.

If only you were here

I would no longer fear

My own thoughts, my own words, my own ways.

Dearest Courage, please return

Without you, I’ll never learn

How to be brave, to be strong, to be resilient.
