Dearest Death

Dearest Death,

There is a simple but true memory of us that lives forever in the shadows of my mind

It creeps upon me now and I’d like to recall it with you

The music of my life was slowing

It then changed and a waltz began soft and elegant

Ticking by with the time of the music was a moment

Each graceful planned moment was fleeting and quickly creeping past

I danced hesitantly with you

I tried to evade your gaze but it was captivating

There you were, staring at me in the cold darkness of night

You lead me in this ever long dance of life

You guided me smoothly always ready to catch me in your arms when I fell down

Sometimes you were my only reliable partner

Sure there were others Love, Laughter, Pain, and Regret

But none of these partners ever remained as constant and as reliable as you, sweet Death

You were always there, always waiting ever so patiently

You crept into the dance slowly, I never even saw you coming

Often times before I knew it you had stolen the lead to this dance

Your lead gave me a sense of fear at the disappearance of my former partners

At the same time you had brought me an unsettling calmness

As your hand rested on my back, I felt a cold chill

The dance was nearing a close and once it did my dearest Death, you were determined to kiss my lips

You desired to steal me away and making me yours forever more

I awaited that cold yet comforting kiss as the music slowed and came to a sudden stop

There was a moment of attraction between you and me, Death

That second of reflection on your dance in comparison to the others I had known

A cold kiss then fell upon my lips and I slowly slipped away

Away into your world and the dark path of uncertainty that lied beyond

To this day I do not know what has become of me

Nor do I know where I am

All I can recall is that last dance

Our waltz across the dark hours of midnight and the kiss that sealed it permanently in my mind

I wish this were to unsettle you as it does me

But that cold hearted kiss has lead me to believe otherwise

So with this final flourish I leave you my dearest Death

Forever yours,

Your dance partner
