Decaying Daydreams

I sit on a bench, waiting,
For reasons quite unknown.
Other than my Daydreams
I am in every way alone.

Perhaps the bus has not arrived,
Perhaps I’m waiting for my lover,
I lean back, close my eyes;
Wonder what I will discover.

Suddenly I am gone
No longer am I a being;
I fly high above the world
And all that is, I am seeing.

On a screen a woman dancing
Her eyes wide, her mind free,
The stars in her irises collide,
Then they fall into the sea.

I stare at a burning pyre
See eyes alight in orange and red:
Some are laughing, some are crying
As they grieve and mourn their dead.

Across the world, in a place of peace
A young girl sighs, then breathes deep;
She dreams of bright birds of flight
Laying in her father’s arms, asleep.

I blink, and all is light,
I stand atop a mountain, about to fall
Wishing to fly towards a setting sun.
All this at once, yet none at all.

Another blink, now surrounded by noise
I am once again on a bench,
Back to the place called Reality,
Surrounded by my city’s bitter stench.

Now that I’ve escaped a Daydream’s warm embrace
I shiver, move around in my seat;
Once again the blood starts moving
And my heart remembers to beat.

Behind my left shoulder, Daydreams beckon
They offer up stories, tales of adventures;
Millions of silver screens, just behind the eyes,
All for my enjoyment, I need not even venture.

But the bus has come and gone,
I was too Spacey for my lover,
And while the clouds are crowded,
That’s not where I’ll find another.

I rise from my bench and walk away
The Daydreams follow, feeling ignored though,
They cry, peck my arms and sides
I scream, ‘I love you but let me go!’

‘Reality welcomes me, if I’m willing
But I need to get out of my head.
There will be plenty of time for Daydreams
When I am done and old and dead.’

‘In my head lie galaxies, yes
But there’s a whole Universe out there.’
The Daydreams shiver, then kaleidoscope away,
They fly towards the clouds, up in the air.

I have risen, I am now aware,
I breathe in and start to run
To the sound of a ticking clock and my beating heart
I smile and soar towards a setting sun.
