Dedicated to Daddy

It stumbles and trembles in my hand, if my dad were here he would understand best of all it be last Spring again, but they turned off the fire hydrants, locked green leaves away, sprinkled ashes on you and sent you on your way. I wouldn't mind the early Spring if you came home today, I'd tell you how much I miss you and know I be okay, mama isn't laughing now she works hard and she cries, she wonders when true laughter will relieve her from her sighs, and even when she smiling her eyes don't smile along her face is growing older she doesn't seem as strong, I worry cause I love her, mama says "where there is love there is a way", its funny how we never know excatly how much we'll say, its funny how a dream can fade with the break of day, I'm not sure where you are now though I see you in my dreams, mama says "the things we see aren't always as they seem", so often I'm uncertain if you have found a new home, and when I'm uncertain I usaully write a poem. Time can't erase the memory, time can't bring you back, last Fall was apart of me and now apart is gone, so theres my poem, my calling and my song.

I am 21 years old, am attending Hamline University in Saint Paul, MN in September with a major in creative writing, I have been writing poetry since I was nine, and began shortly after the death of my foster dad in 2002, and been writing ever since. this scholarship would mean a lot to me because I live with my foster mom who can't send me through school on the social security income she receives. This has been my biggest dream to be the first in my family to go to college without dropping out and graduate with a degree.

this was the first poem I had ever written, at the age of nine after the death of my foster dad in 2002.
