dedicated student

My Skin is black, but

I am the dedicated student, the one you see everyday
Although you do not quite know me
So mistake me for a thug,
You judge me as a rascal,
You ignore my insights,

My Skin is black so you compare me to a dummy,
You are ashamed to be seen with me,
But when you have put a pen and paper in my hand,
Then you realize I am the dedicated student.
