Defending the Dream

Martin as you lie peacefully at the mountaintop

And although your eyes can no longer see violent cops.

I know your ears hear the screams and chatter

Of the voices crying out “Black Lives Matter”!

Like the past “black” seems to be the villains’ aim

Killing our men and stealing their fame.

Oh “my Martin” where is your great voice

Telling us that “all lives matter” without choice

My heart sings a song to outsmart the haters

Telling my people not choose violence, don't date her.

Surely the answer to peace is not as simple as it seems

But please let our hearts not ignore “black screams”

The Dream lying heavy on President Obama’s shoulders

Reflects the struggles as the world gets colder

I know Martin you would be proud

To know the people turned out in record crowds

Peacefully and dedicated to the dream

We voted trying to silence unjust screams

You know the steps to equality are stones of injustice

But your strong voice left the door open to justice

Martin as you rest at the mountaintop

We’ll peacefully defend the dream until violence stops
