The Defense's Case

All rise Court is now in session You may be seated The defense calls Jonah Gabriel King to the stand Ladies and gentlemen The oppressed would like his chance to speak And I know you have your objections To which I calmly say… overruled Cuz I mean this is insanity Like I’m finally exhaling without being drowned Under a sea—no an ocean Of cries, convicting me of this crime You want the truth You can’t handle the truth You can’t contain the truth Not when the truth is right in front of you Right under your nose That you can smell the roses And believe it’s not there Ladies and gentlemen I have a lot worse names I could call you than ladies and gentleman So I’m not gonna call out names You see my Grandmomma taught me everything I know So I’m not gonna be rude And you best believe I’m not going to be disrespectful I’m not rappin this time This time I’m a poet This time I have words Words you never heard Because they’re words I never said I don’t know if these words were meant to be said But I’m saying them So I guess I just got to run with them Because in the end At the end of the day All the way to the end of life Words are all I have Even if I have the command of armies General Merriam Webster You can sit this one out This is my fight This one’s dedicated to those on the inside In the air conditioning Where it is cool and comfortable And damn well you believe it’s a great place to be While I’m outside talkin to the air Because my choir forgot to show up And what’s a preacher without a choir? A very lonely preacher That one really gets to me Cuz when you jumble all those metaphors together You get the life that I live And the way that I live it Do you have any idea what you’ve done? What you put me through? I ran with the devil And told God I still love him All to back up this dream I never achieved Acceptance… Because all you gave me was denial Put me on trial And convicted me Of being me… Case dismissed
