Definitions

Ever since preschool I was called "tubby" just because I had more muscle than most kids

Ever since elementary school I was called weird for having a Russian mother

Ever since middle school I was called a nerd for having my head in books and wanting to grasp all the knowledge that I could get my hands on

What I failed to understand at the time was that those kids had been using the wrong adjectives.

My muscles aren't "bulky" or manly"

They are a reminder that I am a strong woman who can fend for herself in this world.

I am able to lift my spirits and those around me with ease.

My foreign mother doesn't make me an "outcast" or an "outsider"

She has instilled Russian culture into me which diversifies my character making me who I am.

Knowledge of my own culture allows me to contribute to others' knowledge therefore allowing for a more cohesive social fabric.

My insatiable appetite for knowledge doesn't make me "boring" or "lifeless"

The determination I experience drives me to learn more and become a better person.

Each piece of knowledge paves the way to my success.

Ever since high school, I choose what defines me.

Others cannot define me.

I define myself.
