Dessert of Hope

My eyes beg to shut, buy my mind tells them not to. My mind is running in circles. Round and Round. There’s a break for the catching of its breath. But then it goes again and starts over. There are clouds blurring the road in front. There’s a cough. A tick of the clock. A pounding of the head. Eyelids opening, closing. Eyes dilating and then returning to normal. The mind is chasing itself. It’s eating itself with worry and a side plate of pain. The dessert is a small slice of hope. There is a man who isn’t just a man. He is loved. He is cherished. He is respected. He is family. He is in pain and suffering. Let God bring him through. His wife weeps for his return and his family too. The floors soak up all their pain. But I only hope he soaks up all of their love. I only hope his eyes flicker and flutter. I only hope for a flicker of the line, a wave passing through. It’s all telling us that the ocean is up and brushing ashore once again. I only hope those eyes fly open. While my eyes stop begging and they dilate with joy and warmth. I’m waiting for that slice, That slice of hope to turn into a cake.
