Destination
Growing up all I wanted to do was learn my ABC’s
Not that I’m older now it all comes so easy to me
The arithmetic, the equation, the explanation the destination
I could figure problems out with no hesitation
And I received my acceptance letter and said, “look, momma, I made it”
But did I really make it?
Is this what it turns out to be
The dream of a higher education isn’t just ordinary
We are in a maze and we are all little mice
And the people in charge roll the dice
I am lost and drowning and drowning in debt
And I wish I never told my mom I made it just yet
Because I was just beginning and I have so much regret
The destination I dreamed wasn’t something I’d forget
I am putting my parents through so much strain
The thought of it has been hacking my brain
I want to make them proud, I want to shock the world
So, I can’t stop now I need to win that bet
If you don’t know what I’m talking about you can just take a look around
Go to your nearest doctor’s office and see who holds the crown
I am trapped under a system that I used to value so much
Tonight, I calculate how much this debt holds me down
Or the fact that I will be the only Black doctor in this town
I am a strong believer that I can set my mind to anything
The journey is the destination
And I am awaiting my arrival
As soon as this debt clears, I am on my first step towards survival.
