Detention Sonnet

I sit here with unfamiliar faces all around me They are my peers but yet we have never met A ticking clock, my table and a blank wall is all I see I’m just watching the minute hand thinking “Can I leave, yet?” Though I notice there are drawings all over this table I think all these scribbles must have their own stories and authors Even the legs are so old and wobbly it’s making it unstable The kids who sat here before me now could be criminals or doctors Though my classmates surrounding me now, have no idea what their future has in store Some must think they will never get past here Some must have already figured out the career they adore Either way the end of their time at this school is very near And the clock strikes five, no more pondering for me I’ve figured out nothing, but I can finally leave

I was inspired to write this as I sat in a room full of diverse kids and I couldn't help but wonder what the future would hold for all of us there.
