Diary of an Essential Worker

Diary of an Essential Worker

See my smile? It’s a fake.
See me happy? I’m trying.
All your words they linger in my head.
How can you not see I’m dead?
I’m dead inside.
With no strength. You’ve taken it away.
Like a machine, I get the job done.
I fill a space. I do it so no one else has to.
The job isn’t easy. Its hard to do on a good day.
On a bad day, it barely gets done, the bare minimum.
I’m dead inside.
So maybe part of me is strong.
Strong enough to keep going even though I’m dead inside.
So I smile.
