Did I Ask Enough Questions?

What makes me, me?

Is it the name I was given at birth?

The one that is repeated in every introduction and every piece of documentation?

That my parents spent hours perfecting

The one that I choose to ignore.

Am I my nickname instead?

Is it my cascading blonde locks? My pale skin?

The same strands of DNA that stand out in a sea of tan brunettes

All who share my last name?

Am I automatically #BASIC because I’m a blonde white girl who struggles?

But not enough to matter?

Is it the hidden scars on my arm

That define who I am?

Reminding me that I was weak

That I can break and fall

And stay down?

Can I just be the girl who doesn’t let the world define her

Who cares more about the effort then the outcome

Who cries more from laughter instead of sadness

Who is proud of who she sees in the mirror?

Because that is who I am.

It’s what makes me, me.
