Did I Wake Up Flawless
Did I wake up flawless?
It certainly doesn’t feel like it.
Actually
I think I woke up with more flaws than I fell asleep with
Is my forehead still growing?
Are these clothes still too tight?
My teeth are getting more crooked every hour
And my acne has overrun my face
Did I wake up flawless?
I think the answer’s clear
I didn’t wake up flawless
But that’s no secret to anyone
I didn’t wake up like this
I worked for it
I didn’t wake up an honors student
I didn’t wake up with a high GPA
I woke up with determination
That’s all you really need
If you wake up every morning expecting to be flawless
You’ll be disappointed every time
But if you wake up determined to be flawless
Disappointment will be the farthest thing from your mind
So no
I am not flawless
I’m probably more flawed than most
But that’s okay
My flaws make me who I am
Big forehead
Big hips
Crooked teeth
Acne
And all of the others
Have made me into the person I am today
I can’t say I’m at the place where my physical appearance is the thing I love most about me
But I can say that my intellect is
I love shocking my English teachers with my vocabulary
I love surprising my math and science teachers with my ability to grasp complex concepts
I love being able to have discussions with my social studies teachers about past and current events
I love learning
I love that there’s a world full of things to discover just waiting for me
I love walking into a classroom and being able to say that I’m in my element
I didn’t wake up like this
I woke up with determination and built myself form the ground up
