Dirty Penny Blues

A man on the corner shakes his cup without cue. How must he act in front of me and you? A heart that is small, hard, and blue, I can see it in his eyes as he shakes his cup... so blue. But a fire burns bright. and he shakes his cup for freedom. A jingle in its ring is a rhythm that liberates. like an old saxophone or a Trumpet from a time before... men on corners, different Hughes. but the people keep walking. Am I the only one to see the fire tonight? It is a treasure in his sunken eye.
