Disability Means Inability
I hear giggling laughter
I'm eager to know the cause
Suddenly I know
By the way they all stare at me
Everyone says
Be Yourself
It seems okay for everyone else
But not for me
I have no choice anyways
I can't be free of what I do
My body
My mind
My emotions
They act out without my command
Weird, frustrating, reckless,
I hear my peers say this about me
They also say freak
They think I can't hear or understand
But I know why I'm treated this way
My parents, my teachers, my counselors
They've told me my problems
I know all my limitations
All of my bugs
All of my disadvantages
I won't go to college.
I won't get married.
I may never move out.
I will work a low-wage job at best.
People will always think I'm unable
I don't have the opportunity
To chase my dreams
I don't even have anyone
To tell about them.
As a kid I've been bullied
But I will soon be an adult
No longer directly tormented by peers
Yet forever tormented by
The assumption that greatness
Is out of my reach.
I wrote this poem because I believe there is not enough action being taken to help people who face disabilities: mentally, emotionally, physically, etc. I am a student Teacher Assistant for the Special Education class at my high school. These kids are constantly overlooked. They all struggle to make friends outside of their class. Even the friends they have aren't involved in their lives outside of school. They are constantly excluded. Society teaches that they are unable to do what everyone else does. I don't think society should tell us anything. I think more people with disabilities should be able to say for themselves what they are capable of. It may be harder for them and they might need more help to accomplish what nondisabled people do, but it's not impossible! I hope to change the world I live in by inspiring people to care more. If people cared more they would notice and admit the truth! Disabled are overlooked! And I will not accept it.
