Do They Know?

A throbbing noise,

A memory.

I cling to it.

Do they know?

Awakened,

I am thrown into the sunlight,

But my eyes will not open.

My mind screams

Open your eyes.

How long will I wait?

Numbness succumbs me.

I smile and wave and speak and breathe.

The lies escape my mouth before they reach my head.

Do they know?

Pulled I am from the ground.

Up and up and up.

I float.

Silence for a moment and it is so beautiful.

I am calm.

Meet me up here, will you?

And I try to see.

For you.

But my eyes will not open.

Where are you?

My feet do not touch ground.

I remember not the day, nor the hour.

Searching for your eyes.

I feel them,

But I cannot find them.

Shadows and outlines.

Nothing is concrete.

A figment of my imagination.

A blur of shapes and ideas and dreams.

A second too late.

Do they know?

A flash of white and it is so bright.

I begin to see.

Meet me here.

Arms reaching and grasping,

I can almost feel you.

A brush of kiss on my lip,

Fingers trace my spine.

Desperation.

The pang becomes an old friend,

Familiar.

Fleeting, and in a moment,

Gone.

Everything turns to black.

It is so dark.

My memory is skewed.

Were you ever here?

Toes just barely over the line.

Always.

Always.

Always.

What a mess I have made.

Do they know?

Brushing my hands over every surface,

I feel nothing.

And my breath is short.

I did not know I was running.

When did I start?

Where are you?

A memory.

Up and down

Up and down

Faint laughter and steady breathing.

I feel you watching me.

Come find me.

My stomach aches.

It is so sweet and so terrible.

Why could I not tell them?

Tears flow and flow and flow

And then stop.

Nothing.

I cannot see.

Come back.

I am jolted.

Eyes wide open,

I stare at the girl in the mirror.

A ghost smiles back.

It is a terrifying sight.

A face I do not know.

But I finally see.

You are gone.

They will never know.
