do you know?

do you know what it's like to feel invisible?

because I do

perhaps my physical being has always been seen yet the person inside of me was playing a game of hide and seek

hidden deep within the closets of fear and distrust

do you know what it's like to be afraid?

because I do

perhaps I was always safe yet I could not bring myself to grab her hand at the super market

a simple gesture I always watched others do

do you know what it's like to be judged?

because I do

perhaps she had good intentions when she taught me that my sexuality was wrong rather than chemistry that day

she didn't say it because she knew about me. she said it because she didn't.

do you know what it's like to feel unaccepted?

because I do

perhaps my mother really does love me yet it did not feel that way the day she forced me out of the only safe space i had left

the bible verses did nothing but cause tears to rip at the seems of my lips

do you know what it's like to be proud?

because I do

perhaps you see who i am as a threat to normality yet I look at her and I question how you could see our love as a problem

all we want is the happiness that has been denied to us for so long
