Do you remember me?

Dear dad,

It’s been three months since you have called me or contacted me in any way. The last time we spoke I had just bailed you out of jail and you promised to finally leave your girlfriend who has gotten you arrested three times now. You promised but I knew it was a lie even then. A week later I find out through my sister that you moved back in with your girlfriend.

It’s been three months so why are you calling me now? Is it to say you love me? To tell me you finally left her? Or is it to tell me happy birthday, even though it was two weeks ago? Why now?

I want to hate you but I can’t. Because you’re my dad. I end up hating myself when those thoughts pop into my head. But right now I think I do hate you.

You finally called after three months. I know now why you called. It wasn’t to say I love you. It was to ask your 18 year old daughter if I was able to lend you money. No dad I don’t have any money to give you. I told you I was sorry. I said by daddy I love you but you didn’t say it back.

Don’t you remember me dad? It’s me. Your daughter. Aren’t you supposed to love me? Aren’t you supposed to wish me a happy birthday? Aren’t you supposed to talk to me? Aren’t you supposed to remember who I am?

Love,

Your Daughter
