Do You Remember Nana?
Do you remember when I used to come over and spend the night?
I do, we had so much fun, teaching me to fly a kite.
Do you remember when I came home from school?
You helped me with my homework and loved me to my inner molecule.
Do you remember when you helped me pick out a pair of cleats?
I wore them with pride and that year we didn’t get beat.
Do you remember when you taught me to fight life's battles with all of my might?
Stand up strong with my strength and do not run but do what's right.
Do you remember listening to Freebird over and over?
I do, do much so that I could play it on Guitar Hero on expert and keep my composure.
Do you remember when you used to make me dance with you to Elvis?
I do, I didn’t like the dancing, but the music I will always relish.
Do you remember the recipe for your Snicker-doodles?
No seriously, for one of those things I would go feudal!
Do you remember when you got lost in a town you didn’t know?
I do, the signs were starting to show.
Do you remember when you challenged me to a game of chess?
I do, you were winning and suddenly reached for your chest.
Do you remember when you fell in the church gym?
I do, you tore your hamstring and hurt a limb.
Do you remember when you came to Todd’s graduation?
You wandered around lost and took your own vacation.
Do you remember when you stopped coming to our house?
You were confined to yours like a jailhouse.
Do you remember when you fell?
This was beginning to become a hell.
Do you remember when you stopped talking?
I do, I wanted to talk to you but it was like your ears were blocking.
Wait, where am I, who are you?
I kind of remember who.
Do you remember my name?
Grandmaw! Please say you remember my name!
Do you remember your name?
Your name is Reba! Do you remember any of this or is it a game?
Do you remember me helping you?
Helping you like you did me.
Do you remember when your breathing went berserk?
It sounded awful and only got worse.
Do you remember being in hospice?
I do, the pain hit me like a battering ram.
After all, you helped me become the man I am.
Suddenly you slipped from your consciousness.
Do you remember?
Oh it’s just me.
Alone in this room with no one to see.
How death makes one so tender.
Do you remember when you helped shape the man you saw in me?
I do!
I wanted to say what I couldn’t before when your mind shut down and forgot all but vitals.
I love you Nana and I hate Alzheimer’s.
