Dog Tags

As I stood and looked at my surroundings

I could see what once again had begun

There were soldiers dead on the ground that I walked

And suspense in the air

I had prepared for this all my life

But nothing can truly prepare you for the battlefield

I could hear the gun fire

And hear the planes overhead

I killed many men

And I lost my brothers

But I pushed on for my wife and little girl at home

Oh how I longed to be home

I never expected to make it out alive

But I went into battle willing to fight

I did not fight just for me

I did it so my loved ones could be free

Every day I remember

What it was like out in war

But I look at my baby girl

And I remember what these dog tags are for
