Dogs are Better than People

I’ve seen Castaway

And have read Lord of the Flies.

I’ve binge-watched Naked and Afraid

And have a “how-to” survival guide.

But if faced with the real thing,

With the sand and the ocean blue,

And the loneliness and solitude,

I am not sure what I would do.

I would miss family and friends,

Everyone back home.

I would think on this deserted island,

“This is how I am going to die alone.”

But if allowed to bring something,

An object, a person, an abstract thought,

Out of these things that I could take

I would not.

The thing I would bring is my dog.

He is a loyal and kind friend.

A Brittany spaniel named Monte,

The one I want with me ‘til the end.

Yes, I could use a knife or a match

Or even a boat to escape,

But I would bring my dog Monte

Even before duct tape.

He is smart and is fast

And can scare away predators,

He will stay by my side

And will be a vitally good hunter.

But most importantly he will give me company

Because dogs are man’s best friend,

Which is ironic because often times

Dogs are better than people in the end.
