Don’t Look Back

They say you never know what you have

until it’s gone.

Until that icy day when my life changed,

I thought these words were deranged.

Emptiness.

The feeling I felt when I realized

I could no longer call on my superhero to save the day.

Dismay.

The emotion held in the hand of my heart,

knowing I would have to grow up quicker than expected.

Facing challenges alone,

without a hand to hold.

Like a swift wind on an autumn night,

breezing through obstacles in sight.

Relief.

I now know I can be my own hero.

And now that I’ve got my life on track,

there is no looking back.
