Door County's Girl

She draws people from near and far at any time of year. Whether bitter winter or humid summer, her beauty always shines through. Her laugh is a soft breeze; her cry is a much-needed rain. One look in her twinkling eyes reveals the expanse of the starry Wisconsin night sky. Her beachy long hair is washed in Lake Michigan’s lapping shore. Her artistic fingers mold beaches, paint forests, and beckon seashells to shore at Gill’s Rock. Seaweed infested beaches make visitors shy away from her otherwise inviting landscape. I do admit the truth to this drawback, for I have fallen victim to the weedy trap. However, those who find this a setback need to understand the grimy beaches are a result of nature’s course, not her confident hands. The cries and whines against the limited vacancies in hotels and campgrounds are heard. Do the criers and whiners not understand she does this only to keep the beauty of the Peninsula as pure as possible? Besides these frivolous complaints, the Door establishes a flawless environment for people of all types. From art galleries to mini-golf, there is more to her than geographical beauty. Her boutiques represent all that she is- artistic, trendy, and creative. Cherries stain her lips red from Lautenbach’s renowned pie. Galleries display jewelry, paintings, sculptures, and every other artwork under the sun. Peninsula State Park, Red Putter Mini-Golf, Fun Stuff Boutique: these are a few of my favorite things. Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Gill’s Rock. The four places that make up the memories in my mind. She embodies these places. She is everything: considerate, loving, athletic, artsy, and fun. She is the girl everyone wants to know. She is Door County.
