Doorstep

It will never be too long since the last time
you spun into my nightmares and
tumbled back into my life.

With an honest heart and a safety net
we were everything we thought we loved
and nothing that you could burn.
I stopped calling for a reason.

Put the empty promises you spoke of into boxes;
wrap them up in the stupidity to believe in you again
and ring the bell so I can open a door to the illusion
of feeling wanted

What you'll never see is a girl
with a truth that cuts like a butter knife
and her secrets dispersed like shrapnel
on your doorstep.

Locked.

She'll never say a word
so long as her soul keeps melting
into her spine.
