The Doorstep of my Heart

I looked out my window And saw you standing on my porch Then pacing ‘round in circles ‘Round and ‘round before my door At first I just ignored you And supposed you’d go away Then I began to hope— To hope that you would stay I watched in silence from my window Watched you pace across my floor And wondered which way you would choose Which side of my door The rhythmic beating of your footsteps Matched my heart in time and speed And I wondered if you knew How each footfall was hurting me It’s ridiculous, I know But I’m as patient as I’ll get And I’m impatient with you now Come in, or go away--I don't care which —just get off my doorstep
