Dousing The Flames

I said I would never forget

The day our lips first met

I told you that I would stay yours

That I would stay my course

But in the end

It was you who gave in

I swore my heart to you

But you did not stay true

I remember the nights I cried

Hoping my heart’s ache for you would subside

And as girls tempted and tried

I remained faithful and denied

The night I arrived a part of me died

I had seen what you came to decide

That I was not enough

And me being so tough

I swallowed it and kept it real

I took a bullet and acted like I couldn’t feel

I put a mask and played my role

Our fire was now just the remains of ashes of coal

The smoke from the fire

Was a hopeless reminder

Of what used to be our romance

And the first time I ever took a chance

What I once saw consumed in flames

Has now been doused and been tamed

I started out as her hero

But in the end I was left a zero

They said it was just a phase

But I was left in such a daze

I didn’t see her fade away

Now she is here left with nothing to say

She is speechless well I am too

She is looking at me like I have answers but I don’t know what to do

No one ever told me what to do when you get to where we are at

I can’t tell her what I am feeling because I am not good at that

I look at her and smile while my heart begins to sink

And I am hoping that she doesn’t come to think

That this news has come to cut me deep

And that it would cause me to lose some sleep

No I wouldn’t allow it to cause her any pain

Even when I was left with nothing to gain

I would fake a smile so she could be happy

I would tell her there is no need to worry about me

I am man right

I can go to sleep by myself at night

I don’t need a bed light

I can handle my own in a fight

Why do I need you to worry

All you need to know is I am sorry

Those words kill me as it leaves my mouth

And everything around me begins to go south

Memories flash by

 As the ashes fly

I look for hope in what used to be a fire

Even though it is my burning desire

There is nothing left but dust and ash
