The Dove

Seat of white wicker feels home.
Sky’s lantern rests.

Brought shells to the beach
Of a small lake or big swamp.
I followed the rainbow
From Gander Mountain

To the chest of beer:
Natty Light, Budweiser Ameri-can, Guiness too,
Hops and water and wheat and yeast.
Pull and push the tab; a crack.

Mooney grabs the barrel;
Shoulders the stock, fingers the lock
Strolls to the perch, loads the shot,
Pumps the chamber closed, pushes safety.

PULL and aim the twelve gauge,
Clay pigeon soars, hammer smacks
Powder in the casing.  A ringing flash.
Black and orange fireworks;
Splashes victory.

A dove glides overhead,
A pearlescent feather waltzes.
