The Dream

I dream of ocean tides
treasures in the sea
sweeping in and leaving behind
things better left in the deep
and on foggy mornings, it will be seen
the gifts an ocean brings
beetroot, onions and turnip greens
memories...
a place where ocean surrounded land
it caressed the shores
it gave rise and fall
it loved, deeply it loved
a place where the ocean embraced land
so completely, too completely
and this place gave itself to its lover
perhaps it sank, or it just stopped swimming
but it lives out of the sunlight now
it resides in the deep
but its memories are sweet
of the stain a beetroot leaves
the sun that brought out the turnip greens
sweet soil that surrounded the onion at the root
this place it longs
this place it waits
setting free its treasured waste
useless here beneath the sea
helpless in the oceans deep.

I find comfort here
in this bar I know
in this bar near the shore of the sea
I feel embraced in this place
full of smoke
full of no one that I know
it takes me away
to a place no longer surrounded by needs
to a place where conversation heeds
and home is just behind that tree
within that picket fence
behind that yellow door
in that chair
there, beside the fire
I find comfort here
cutting beetroots that I found
cutting turnips that the sea didn't need
peeling onions, so putrid sweet
but it is so, and this is where I leave.
