A Dream Can Make a Difference

Blood stains my hands // I can hear my heart pounding in my ears

I can't seem to get enough air // I look at the body lying in front of me

My whole body is shaking in fear // I can't stop staring at the dark hue

Oh, my God, it's so cold // Lifeless

But there's no one else here // Just me and a seemingly dead body

Tears roll down my cheek // As I take off my sweater and press it against the wound

Looking down into the pale face of the man // I don't know who he is, not even a name

Nothing that tells me about him // He's someone's child, could be a dad

And he's dying alone // No one here

But he's not alone // It'll be okay, someone will be here soon

It seems that days pass // Flashing red lights finally approach

Hands take away the body // Someone says something reassuring to me

Nodding wordlessly, I stare after the gurney // All I see is white in the ambulance

A body covered in red // It seems so wrong, the color is wrong

"You did all you could" // "You were very brave"

Comforting voices surround me // Can't take my eyes off the body

They tell me he died // Nothing I could have done

Nothing you can do

I hope that if I encountered a situation where someone's life was in my hands, I would be able to do something about it. As a nurse, it would be my goal to use all my knowledge and skills to do everything I can to assist patients, whether they are living or dying. One of the best things about nurses, in my opinion, are the opportunities they have to make a difference. They encounter a large number of patients on a daily basis and have the potential to make a difference in someone's life. I know that I will encounter difficult situations. It is practically in the job description. Some of your patients will joyfully recover, while some may face suffering for long periods and eventually die. No matter what challenges I encounter in the medical field, my passion to help others will be what drives me. I may not be most outgoing or the smartest person, but I genuinely have a heart for serving others in any way. Becoming a nurse will change the way I live. It wil transform me into someone who has the potential to make a difference.
