Dream of a doctor.
I grew up in a home - or rather a series of homes
In these many homes sat my mother
without a dollar or dime in her pocket
you see, after the bills, and sometimes before
she couldn’t find the money for necessities to afford.
from time to time we kids needed to see the doctor
to help us grow up big and strong and stay poor no longer.
i remember sitting in front of a taco bell with an empty cup in hand
hoping for strangers to feel generous and
fill the cup with a penny or a dollar
so that us kids could afford to see the doctor
I sat one day wondering what I would become
an ice cream man, a teacher, or maybe an actor.
maybe it was the rarity of seeing the physician
that made it seem unattainable for us children.
I’m on my way now, the first of many steps
to changing the rest of my life with this dream position.
