Dreaming in the Shadow
The traffic is loud and the shots are near. How near? The lights don’t light and it’s the middle of the night. We learned this in history, wars and destruction. The community crumbles, as the crackers in the cabinets. Crackers, soup and rent and everything we can't afford.
The dark makes it hard to see. Everything we do is seen though. Do they follow you like they follow me? They see your pockets like it’s the lottery. They expect the lucky numbers but are only disappointed. The nicety in their eyes make it hard to breathe. Breathing is something we can't waste.
The trees make the air feel intoxicating. The siren of the sea is on a black bike and a owns a JanSport and their taking the people by storm, targeting the kids in uniform. But you can't warn someone with the luxury. Fear losing what we don’t have. We don’t want,we need.
Dreaming we never have to see the cracked streets and cracked people. We hope to see the paycheck and warm water, the family working and the cabinets full. Dreaming and hoping is something we do have and can't have taken away from us like the families at the edge of the world.
